President Schiff on Reports of Classified Documents at Mar-a-Lago

August 12, 2022

“Attorney General Garland revealed yesterday that the Justice Department filed a motion to unseal portions of the search warrant that authorized the FBI to recover items from the former president’s residence, including classified information.

“If the reports are accurate and these documents contain some of the most classified information our government has – information classified as top secret/secure information – then that would go a long way to explaining why the department and the FBI made the decision. to obtain a warrant to retrieve the documents. It appears the FBI previously sought to remove these documents to a safe location, but Trump did not fully cooperate. Every day that information of such classification sits in an unsecured location poses a risk to our national security. If another person had information of this nature in their possession, the FBI would work quickly to mitigate the risk of disclosure.

“The protection of classified information, and in particular the protection of sources and methods, is a matter of the highest priority for the Intelligence Committee, and as we learn more, we will responsibly discharge our responsibilities. Whether the former president or any other party has criminal liability is a matter best left to the Department of Justice, and I trust they will pursue their investigation in accordance with the law. .
