Kate Forbes: Countries ‘took much more interest’ in meeting Scottish government officials

FINANCE Secretary Kate Forbes has revealed that countries around the world, including India and the United States, are more interested in meeting Scottish government officials.

Forbes, speaking to SNP MP Drew Hendry on his Scotland’s Choice podcast, said Scotland would fit in “very well” on the international stage.

Forbes said: “As our country renews itself, we must choose our own future before someone else chooses it for us.

“We may have seen some of this come into the public eye at Cop26 where I certainly felt, as a representative of the Scottish Government, a much more active interest from countries around the world who were asking meetings with representatives of the Scottish Government.

“We have seen this particularly in the United States, but also in countries like India, where our renewable energy industry is of particular interest, and in other European countries.”

The Scottish Government Minister spoke about Scotland’s wave and tidal potential, as well as the huge role oil and gas plays in our exports.

She said: “In terms of adapting to the world, we are a small advanced economy with enviable economic strengths and assets.

“I think it was Andrew Wilson who said that – if we achieved independence, we would become one of the richest countries to become independent at independence.”

Meanwhile, Forbes hailed the companies’ importance to Scotland’s global popularity, highlighting how they inform international opinions about our culture, heritage and character.

“This brand is recognizable,” she said. “It’s not a brand from 200 years ago or even 100 years ago, it’s a brand that has been painstakingly built up over the last few years. It’s a brand of quality and we have to do everything in our power to protect it.

Forbes remains convinced that an independent Scotland would only enhance our popularity.

She said: “We have a lot to offer Europe and the world, and we already see that in the limits we have, so what more can we do without the limits?”

Scotland’s Choice is an independence-focused podcast hosted by Hendry.

Episodes air every Tuesday and discuss the Scottish political landscape with politicians and campaigners.

Forbes discussed economic opportunities for Scotland with Hendry, including currency, trade, borrowing powers and pensions.
