Beware of Parking Lot Car Repairs – NBC 7 San Diego
A quick car repair seems like a good deal, especially if it’s done while you’re already busy. If you’ve been approached about a parking car repair, take a second look before agreeing to anything.
“I was going to walk into the store and a guy came over and asked if he could give me a free estimate for his dent work,” said Matthew Sebring. “I am way too confident.”
Sebring’s SUV had a few dents and scratches. When approached in the parking lot of a Mira Mesa convenience store, he thought it might be a good deal.
“I said of course give me a free quote,” Sebring said. “He said it was $ 450. He could do the dent and match the paint.”
The man had a business card and said he worked at a local body shop. He said the owner of a nearby restaurant let him do repairs on the parking lot, so Sebring hired him. Sebring paid $ 480 when the job was done, but said he was unsure of the quality.
“They put wax on it and said it was a paint sealer,” Sebring said.
They told him to leave the wax on for 24 hours, but the next day the terrible repairs were left.
“There’s obviously a spray paint job and it’s splashing all the way,” Sebring said. “I don’t think I’ll ever trust anyone who approaches me. I won’t go unless they have a physical business.”
When he called the police, they said there was nothing they could do.
“I have found that it is not illegal to lie and be bad at something,” Sebring said. “They can do a horrible job, they can actually vandalize, but if you allow them to work there, there’s not much you can do.”
If you are looking to get your car repaired, it is always a good idea to check the company or mechanic first, as well as review reviews of the work they have done.
